Elizabeth Eekhoff

December 18, 1917 — November 23, 2005

Elizabeth Eekhoff, 87, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 23, 2005, at the Presbyterian Village in Ackley, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, November 26 at the First Christian Reformed Church, rural Wellsburg with Pastor Tom Vos officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 7 pm on Friday at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg.



Elizabeth was born west of Wellsburg on December 18, 1917, to Peter P. and Jennie (Siemens) Eekhoff. In 1927 the family moved to a farm southwest of Wellsburg. She graduated from Steamboat Rock Consolidated School in 1935. College included first a one year country-school teaching course at the Iowa State Teacher's College, then later another year of training. In 1950 she received her bachelor's degree from Calvin College in Grand Rapids. A few years later she received her master's degree in education at the University of Northern Iowa.



She taught for a number of years in the rural schools of Hardin and Grundy Counties, and five years at the Timothy Christian School where she was one of the two teachers to begin the school. She taught one year at the Denver, Colorado Christian Grade School, two years at the Pella Christian Grade School, then came home to take care of her invalid mother. After her mother's death she taught for 19 years at the Wellsburg Community School while keeping house for her father who died in 1976. That same year Elizabeth retired for health reasons and moved to Steamboat Rock relocating to Wellsburg in 1989 after losing her house in a fire.



She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school and summer vacation Bible school. Although self-taught at the keyboard, she played the organ at the church for over 50 years. Elizabeth was an avid gardener, working in the soil and canning and freezing the produce. She had many other interests including reading and visiting shut-ins.



Elizabeth is survived by eight nieces and nephews, and one brother-in-law Anco Baker.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Edward Eekhoff; one sister, Pauline Baker; one sister-in-law Martha Eekhoff; and one nephew Lloyd Eekhoff.
