Elaine Sarah Marken, 84, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care unit in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow services at the Rosehill Cemetery in Grundy Center.
Elaine was born on March 6, 1928 in Grundy Center, the daughter of Horace & Agnes (Staker) Travis. She attended school in Grundy Center, graduating with the class of 1946. On December 17, 1946, Elaine was united in marriage to Ralph Dawson Marken in Grundy Center. After the two were married, the couple farmed north of Morrison before moving to Grundy Center in 1991. She was a member of the Morrison Presbyterian Church, later transferring to the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck where she was a very active member. She was most recently a member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center.
For 20 years, Elaine lived with and overcame blindness. She was able to learn braille and marked everything in her home for her to live alone & independently.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidering and crocheted baby blankets. Elaine enjoyed nick knacks and loved to collect things. She was an avid coin collector and also collected things all the way from stamps to spoons. Elaine also loved the time she spent with her husband Ralph. The two enjoyed fishing together and traveling to visit friends, family and Air Force friends Ralph & Elaine had made along the way.
She also enjoyed researching genealogy on her side of the family until she was no longer able to do so.
Elaine is survived by her nieces Judy (Charles) Obrecht, Bonnie (William) McHugh and Linda (Frank) Bennett and nephews Jerry (Lisa) Travis, Terry (Carol) Travis and Earl Travis' children; a sister-in-law Mabel Travis. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ralph in 1999; brother-in-law and his wife Vernon & Arlene Kinsinger; brother Albert Travis; half-brothers Earl Travis, Lee Griffith and a half-sister Alice Travis; 2 nephews Larry & Gary Travis.
