Eileen L. Schultz 91, of Marshalltown, Iowa formerly of Grundy Center, Iowa, died August 20, 2014, at Oakview , in Conrad, Iowa. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 25, 2014, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 24, 2014, at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.
Eileen LaVonne Schultz was born the daughter of George and Marie (Willig) Bessman on January 30, 1923, on a farm near Buckeye, Iowa. She attended local schools and graduated from Alden High School in 1940. It was in 1940 that the family moved to a farm near Wellsburg. Following in her mother's footsteps, Eileen received her nursing education at the Evangelical and Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Marshalltown, Iowa from 1941-1944. On June 26, 1949, Eileen was united in marriage to William J. (Bill) Schultz at St. Peter's United Church of Christ in rural Wellsburg, Iowa. They made their home near Garwin, Chicago, and Gladbrook before settling in Grundy Center where they continued to raise their family. After proudly graduating with Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing Class of 1944, Eileen's registered nursing career included service in hospitals, a nursing home, and area medical clinics. Prior to her retirement in 1985, Eileen was the Director of the Grundy County Public Health Nursing Service for 16 years. Eileen continued to live in Grundy Center after Bill's death on October 7, 1993. In December of 2012 she moved to an apartment at Embers Retirement Community in Marshalltown. She passed away on August 20, 2014 at the age of 91. Eileen was an especially loving and proud grandmother and great- grandmother. She was a member of the Grundy Center United Methodist Church, a past president of the Grundy Center American Legion Auxiliary, and past president of the Marshalltown Evangelical and Community Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She previously served on the Grundy County Board of Health and the Iowa Easter Seals Board. Eileen enjoyed playing cards and board games, watching Iowa Hawkeye games and Cardinals baseball, and spending time with family and friends.
Eileen is survived by three children, Janet (Gary) Ekvall, Joel (Marlene) Schultz and Kelly (Benita) Schultz; three grandchildren: Jolene (James) Schultz, David (Adela) Ekvall and Andy (Jenn) Schultz: three great-grandchildren, Raina Schultz, Mia Zdionica and Nahla Ekvall; one brother, Don (Bonnie) Bessman; sisters-in-law Esther Goos and Beverly Schultz; one brother-in-law Robert Moore; and extended family and many friends.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband Bill; two brothers, Brice and Zeal Bessman; and four sisters, Minnie Eddy, Ruth Roegner, DeLilah Whitmire and Lois Moore. Also preceding her in death were brothers-in-law C.J. (Jack) Eddy, Don Roegner, Merle Whitmire, Edwin Schultz, Frederick (Benny) Rabe, Evan Goos, Robert G. (Bob) Schultz and Theodore (Ted) Schultz and sisters-in-law Martha Bessman, Irene Bessman, Lucille Schultz and Bette Schultz. Her fiancé Wallace Lindaman was tragically killed in action in Europe in World War II.
