, 1:30 P.M. at the Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg with Pastor Michael Weaver officiating. Burial will follow funeral services at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Friday, June 25
th
from 6 to 8 P.M. at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg.
Edwin Behrends was born December 19, 1924 in Wellsburg to Sadie Behrends. He attended country school at Shiloh #8 through eighth grade. Edwin was drafted in the U.S. Army and served as a sergeant during World War II. He was honorably discharged in April 1947. He returned to Wellsburg and was hired by Jerry Lutterman to assist with the farming operation for twelve years.
Edwin was united in marriage to Hattie Schipper on February 24, 1956 in the Aplington Bethel Reformed Church. The Lord blessed this commitment of their love for over 50 years. Edwin and Hattie started farming near Wellsburg and continued to farm tell he retired and moved to town where he currently resided.
Edwin and Hattie were gifted with three children, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Edwin was a life time member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church where he faithfully served as a deacon and prepared audio tapes many years.
On Thursday, June 24, 2010, Edwin was called to his heavenly home after a short stay in the Marshalltown Hospital. Edwin was 85 and died of complications due to infection.
Survivors include his wife Hattie of Wellsburg; his two sons, Glenn (January) of Waverly, Galen (Wanda) of Cedar Falls, one daughter Jean (Dewayne) Hixson of West Des Moines. Grandchildren include Zachary (Sara) Behrends, Travis (Krista) Behrends, Brett (Kelly) Behrends; Tyler Behrends, Trisha (Josh) Robinson, and Kyle and Allison Hixson. Great Grandchildren include Annika, Zane, and Mya Behrends, Porter and Paxton Behrends, Colton and Taylor Behrends and Nevaeh Robinson.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
