Edgar H, Abels, 98, of Dike, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013, at The Western Home in Cedar Falls, Iowa. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Dike. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 16, 2013, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice or The Western Homes Foundation.
Edgar Henry Abels was born the son of Henry and Cora (Wiess) Abels on January 22, 1915, in Grundy County, Iowa. He attended school in rural Rock Lake, North Dakota. Edgar resided in the Dike area most of his adult life. On April 30, 1939, Edgar was united in marriage with Mildred Hale in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Edgar farmed for most of his adult life. He worked at John Deere, Rock Island Arsenal and owned Abels Furniture in Cedar Falls before he started farming. Edgar was a member of Dike United Methodist Church, the Dike Lions Club and Dike Co-op. Playing cards, visiting, woodworking and spending time with family and friends brought him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred in 2006; his parents; two sisters, Winona Lamb and Ella Van Brug.
Edgar is survived by two sons, John Abels of Cedar Falls, and Ross (Deb) Abels of Coralville; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Abels and Walter Abels, and many nieces and nephews.
