Douglas Ward Filbrandt, 69, of Cincinnati, Ohio, formerly of Steamboat Rock and Alden, Iowa, died accidently in his home on May 5, 2012. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson Township Cemetery near Owasa, Iowa. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the local arrangements.
Douglas graduated from High School in Alden, Iowa in 1960, then from Iowa State University with a mechanical engineering degree in 1965 and was in the Army ROTC. He then spent two years in the space program in White Sands, Minnesota. He began employment with the General Electric Corp. in Cincinnati in 1969 and retired in 2002. He was a Civil War and Revolutionary War buff and had a significant antique gun collection and was very active in muzzle loading events. He also enjoyed skiing, golfing, and made several trips to Europe. Each July he traveled to Raton and Taos, New Mexico and participated in the National Black Powder Muzzle Loading Shoot.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Otto E. and Edith Ward Filbrandt formerly of Steamboat Rock. Surviving is his brother, James L. Filbrandt of Iowa Falls, Iowa; sister, Audrey Filbrandt Rydeen of Osceola, Wisconsin; and nephews, Jeffrey A. Rydeen of Osceola and Jack D. Rydeen of and St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin and their families.
