Dorothy M. Schmitt, 91, of Grundy Center, passed away on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 at 10:30 am at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with Pastor Larry Hoop officiating. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 one hour prior to the funeral service at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, in Grundy Center. Burial will follow funeral services at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church Cemetery in rural Holland. Memorials may be made to the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church 18935 K Avenue Holland, IA 50642.



Dorothy was born on May 17, 1919 on a farm near Holland, Iowa. She was the daughter of Henry H. and Grace K. [Meyer] Smit. She attended Colfax No. 8 rural school and graduated from the Grundy Center High School in 1937.



She worked in Grundy Center for many years, beginning at Bloxham’s Variety Store, the IGA Grocery Store and Tick Tock Grocery Store. Dorothy also worked at Arnold’s Dress Shop in Waterloo. Later she worked for the local telephone company as a switchboard operator and a secretary. She spent some time at the Newton and Greene offices and many years at the Grundy Center office.



Dorothy was a lifelong member of the Colfax Presbyterian Church in rural Holland and served as an organist, pianist and choir accompanist during her younger years.



Dorothy was united in marriage to her husband George Schmitt on November 1, 1969 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home on a farm near Dike, IA. They retired in 1980 and moved to Grundy Center. George passed away on June 17, 1988. Dorothy continued to make her home in Grundy Center until her death last Thursday. She will be missed and long remembered by her friends and family.



Dorothy is survived by her sister Vernice Schmidt of LaVista, NE, her brothers Wilbur Smit of Holland, IA and Darris Smit of Cedar Falls, IA; her nieces Kathy (Jim) Whitney of Janesville, IA, Shari (Jim) Stewart of Danville, KY and Colleen (Kelly) Hood of Omaha, NE; her nephew Paul (Sharon) Smit of Grundy Center, IA; her step-children Doris (Rick) Burger of Cedar Falls, IA, Malinda Schmitt of Clinton, IA, Delwyn (Brenda) Schmitt of St. Peters, MO, DeLon (Lori) Schmitt of Dike, IA; step-son-in-law Eric Rose of Cedar Falls, IA and step-daughter-in-law Eileen Van Kooten Schmitt of Dallas Center, IA; her 14 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband George, her step-daughter Marilyn Rose; her step-son Duane Schmitt, her brother-in-law William Schmidt and sister-in-law Sylvia Smit.
