Dorothy Mae Beenken, 86, of Grundy Center, Iowa passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2011 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa with Pastor Beth Olson officiating. Burial will follow at the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.

Dorothy was born March 21, 1925, in rural Grundy County, the daughter of Henry and Emma Henningsen. She graduated from Beaman High School. Dorothy was united in marriage to Rient Beenken on November 8, 1947, at the Methodist Church in Beaman, Iowa. They welcomed two children into their family. Dorothy began her career at the Spokesman Press and then went on to work at the Grundy Register for more than 30 years as a typesetter and proofreader.

She was a lifelong member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. Dorothy had a fondness for both owls and ladybugs. Her true happiness came from spending time with her friends and family.

Dorothy is survived by her husband, Rient; children Bruce (Linda) Beenken of Kent, WA and Dianne (Bruce) Bascom of Hudson, IA; grandchildren Carrie (Mark) Barak and Jamie (Ryan) Little both of Kent, WA, Danielle Bascom of St. Louis, MO, Cody Bascom of Hudson, IA; great grandchildren Peyton and Madison Barak and nephews, Richard (Sandra) Henningsen of Rural Grundy Center, IA and Robert (Jann) Henningsen of St. Louis, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother Wilbur Henningsen.
