Dorothea Maurine Appel, 99, of Grundy Center, passed away on May 27, 2018 at the Creekside Living Facility in Grundy Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 31, at 2:00 PM at the Bethany Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center with Reverend Al Polito officiating. A visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 1:00 PM at the church. Interment will follow the service at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Dorothea Maurine Appel was born on February 23, 1919 in Clemens, IA, to her parents Maynard and Florence (Weese) Good. She attended Rhodes High School graduating with the class of 1936. Dorothea was united in marriage to Raymond Henry Appel on November 7, 1939 at her parent’s home in Rhodes, IA. After their marriage, they farmed for a year near Clemens, IA, and later moved to Grundy Center where they farmed for 43 years, retiring in 1983. Dorothea was a member of the Bethany Presbyterian Church since April, 1943, where she played organ for 24 years. Dorothea enjoyed flowers, baking homemade bread and cinnamon rolls, sewing, and spending time with family and friends.
Dorothea is survived by her loving children: Eileen Wyatt of Grundy Center, Gary (Teresa) Appel of Grundy Center, LeAnn Pappas of Casa Grande, AZ, and Donovan (Judy) Appel of Grundy Center; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; sister Jeanne (Dick) Sharer of Van Alstyne, TX; sister-in-laws Carrol Appel and Lillian Appel, and many nieces and nephews. Dorothea is preceded in death by her parents, husband, granddaughter Jennifer Urban, brothers Ronald Good and Keith Good, son-in-laws Doug Wyatt, Stan Urban, and Michael Pappas.
