Dorla Mae Petersen, 75, of Dike, passed away at her home on Saturday, January 4, 2014. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 8th at 11:00 A.M. at the Fredsville Lutheran Church in rural Cedar Falls. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 7th from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Engelkes-Abels Dike Chapel, 680 Main St., Dike, IA and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Burial will take place at the Elmwood Cemetery in Dike. The family requests that you please omit flowers due to a severe family allergy. Memorials can be directed to the family.
Dorla was born on October 11, 1938 in Mahaska County, Iowa, the daughter of Merlin & Thelma (Fielder) Hickey. She attended school and graduated from Dike High School in 1956. In 1958, Dorla was united in marriage to Larry Arends at the Pleasant Valley Reformed Church near Fern, IA. They welcomed 4 children into their family and farmed together in Grundy Co. The couple later divorced in 1986. Dorla married Vernon "Pete" Petersen on November 18, 1988 at the Fredsville Lutheran Church in Cedar Falls. Dorla attended Pitzie's Beauty School in Waterloo. She owned and operated Dorla's Beauty Shop out of her home in rural Cedar Falls for many years. She also worked for Montgomery Ward and the Western Home, both in Cedar Falls.
She was a member of the Fredsville Lutheran Church. She was very active in bible study, prayer group, Bridge Club, Meals on Wheels and the Hi-Lo Camping Club. Dorla enjoyed gardening and antiques, but her family was the most important to her. She was "Grandma Dorla" to many and her family will miss her dearly while treasuring their memories.Dorla is survived by her husband Vernon of Dike; children Lori (Don) Ferris of Marion, IA, Mike Arends of Cedar Falls, IA and Leah (Curt) Johnson of Dike; 5 step-children; twin sister Doris (Dennis) Schuck of Lanesboro, MN and sister Jan Buskohl of Dike; grandchildren Lindsey (Casey) Brandhorst, Courtney (Brady) Behrens & Katelyn Ferris, Casie (Lane) Bass, Dustin Arends, Kohle Arends & Chase Arends and Tanner, Trevor, Trent & Tate (2002-2011) Johnson; great-grandchildren Reid Brandhorst, Bennett Behrens and Bryce, Brooklyn & Briley Bass; 9 step-grandchildren and 16 step great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son Mark Arends; grandson Tate Johnson; brother Wilford Hickey & brother-in-law Kendall Buskohl.
