Doris O. Arends, 88 of Grundy Center, passed away on Monday, June 13, 2016 at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. Services will be held privately by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask people to make a donation in Doris's name to their preferred charity. The family mourns the loss of their matriarch, but at the same time celebrates a life well lived.
Doris was born in 1928 in Holland, Iowa. In 1930, when she was two, she moved with her parents, Everett and Helen Temple, to White, South Dakota to work a farm owned by her grandfather, John Siefken. Over the next decade they lived on a number of different farms around South Dakota and experienced the difficulties common to all the rural folks living on the Plains during the Dust Bowl years. They moved back to Grundy center in 1943. Doris married Doug Arends in 1948. She was employed for 35 years at the Spokesman Press. She was active in her church and was an avid golfer and quilter. She is survived by two sons Steve (Vicky) Arends of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Stuart Arends of Willard, New Mexico; three grandchildren Michelle (Jeff) Runde of Dubuque, Rebecca (Tim) Lalk of Waverly and Ryan (Sarah) Arends of Ankeny; and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Doug.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the nursing staff at Hospice, the staff at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck, all the friends who supported Doris during her illness, with a special thank you to Kay England, and Cheryl Kuehn.
