Donna Marie (Wagoner) Hogle, 91, of Ames, formerly of Conrad, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024 at Northridge Village Long Term Care Facility in Ames following several years of enduring dementia related health issues. A private family burial will be held at the Sheller Cemetery and a memorial service will be held Monday, February 5th at 11:00 AM at the Ivester Church of the Brethren in rural Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family, where they will donate to an organization(s) of their choice at a later time. Cards may be mailed to the Hogle Family at 28818 E Avenue, Conrad, IA 50621.
Donna was born on January 2, 1933, in Des Moines, IA to her parents Claude and Maurine (Stine) Wagoner of Adel, Iowa. Donna grew up on the family farm with her three brothers and graduated from Adel High School in 1950. After high school, she went on to earn her degree in elementary education from McPherson College in Kansas in 1954. Donna was united in marriage to Lee Hogle on August 6, 1954 at the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren in Adel, Iowa. They lived in Denver, CO for almost a year while Lee completed his military service and Donna taught 2nd grade. They moved back to Lee’s family farm in rural Conrad in the summer of 1955. Donna substitute-taught school off and on for several years until “retiring” to become a full-time mother, homemaker and farmer’s wife. She and Lee were blessed with four sons, but feeling their family needed a girl to be complete, they adopted Kay from South Korea in 1974. In 1983, Donna ventured into a joint business with Brenda Shine operating the Conrad General Store, a country décor, craft, sewing and quilting supply store. They later added Jeannie Zehr to their partnership and in 1992 Donna decided to “fully retire” so she and Lee could start spending winters in Arizona. In 1990 They moved off the farm into their new “dreamhouse” in Conrad and began to enjoy more time with family, traveling and pursuing hobbies and other activities.
Donna was a sewing, crafting and quilting “queen”. She loved everything about it except the math…for which she often enlisted Lee’s assistance. When she wasn’t crafting or sewing/quilting she could often be found gardening, tending her flowers or watching and feeding birds (not squirrels)! She was a champion pie baker, winning the Grundy County Fair pie baking contest at least twice. Donna was a long-time member of the Ivester Church where she taught Sunday school, Bible school, sang in various musical groups and helped out where ever needed. For several years she volunteered to travel to natural disaster sites and helped care for children. She enjoyed time with her family and always worked so hard to make her home and meals just “perfect” for family gatherings.
Donna is survived by sons Gary (Barb) of Fort Wayne, IN, Ken (Tamberlyn) of Ankeny, Bob (Sandy) of Conrad, and Ed (Ann) of Ames and daughter Kay (Antroy) of Boston, MA; 10 grandchildren, 2 special grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in-laws. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee in 2020; her parents Claude and Maurine Wagoner; brothers, Paul and Dick Wagoner and twin-brother Don Wagoner.
