Donald Strickler

October 6, 1926 — February 11, 2010

Donald Ray Strickler, 83, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died Thursday, February 11, 2010, at Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral Services will be 10:30 A.M. Monday, February 15, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center, Iowa, with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be on Sunday, February 14, 2010, from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm at the Engelkes Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church and Cedar Valley Hospice both in Grundy Center.

Donald was born October 6, 1926, in Eldora, Iowa the son of Glenn and Mary (Wright) Strickler. He was raised in Grundy Center, Iowa and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1944. Donald served his country proudly in the United States Air Force from April 5, 1945, to November 2, 1945, and then was called back to duty from July 28, 1950, to September 28, 1951, during the Korean War. On September 23, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa he was united in marriage to Irene Bernice Mussett. The couple made their home in the Grundy Center area where they farmed most of their married life. After retiring Donald liked to do woodworking and also traveling with Irene. Donald was a member of the Grundy Center United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Grundy Center Kiwanis and the American Legion Post #349- AMVETS #17of Grundy Center. Donald loved to spend time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife: Irene of Grundy Center; three daughters: Sharon Thompson and her husband Bill of Sac City, Iowa, Carol Flory of Des Moines, Iowa, and Nancy Cordes and her husband Randy of Wellsburg, Iowa; 7grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; one brother, Gerald Strickler of Grundy Center. He was preceded in death by his parents; step-sisters: Katherine Slater, Ethel Eslinger; step-brother; Harold Lynch: sister-in-law: Mary Lou Strickler.
