Donald C. "Don" Stephan, 77, of Reinbeck, passed away at his home on Thursday, August 14, 2014 in Reinbeck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 18th at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Gabriel Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck with Father David Kucera officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 17th from 5 to 7 P.M. at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck with a 7 P.M. scripture service. Burial will take place following the luncheon at the Reinbeck Cemetery.
Don was born on October 10, 1936 in New Hampton, Iowa, the son of Chris & Grace (Stone) Stephan. As a small child, Don and his family moved to Reinbeck where he attended school, graduating in 1954. After high school, Don worked for his parents at Stephan's Bakery, and had a lifetime love of their famous "V" Victory donuts. He worked a variety of jobs including driving an egg truck and later co-owning and operating Stephan's DX gas station and Stephan's Dodge in Reinbeck. He then began his career at Pioneer in Reinbeck, where he later retired from. On September 21, 1957, Don was united in marriage to Lois Ross at the Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Reinbeck. They welcomed three daughters into their family.
He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Reinbeck and was a volunteer firefighter with the Reinbeck Fire Department for many years. Don was a car enthusiast and enjoyed working on them. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and painting his woodworking creations, was an avid Chicago Bears fan, a dog lover, especially his dog Darby. What Don truly enjoyed most in life was spending time with family and friends. Don never knew a stranger in life and was a friend to all. His wife Lois was the love of his life and they are now united together in eternity.
Don is survived by his daughters Teresa (Bob) Strohbehn of Brooklyn, IA, Kristi (Kent) Sorensen of Brooklyn, IA & Patricia (Dervan) Anderson of St. Peters, MO; 12 grandchildren & 16 great-grandchildren; brothers Ken (Shirley) Stephan of Austin, MN & Bob (Jean) Stephan of Reinbeck; sister-in-law Diane Stephan of Reinbeck; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 57 years, Lois; his brother Bruce Stephan.
