Donald Harless

Donald E. Harless, 86, of Eldora, Iowa died on Thursday, November 15, 2012 at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora with his loving family at his side and under the care of Iowa Hospice. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Monday, November 19, 2012 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora with Military Honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post #182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless #3974 of the V.F.W. Visitation is from 2 pm to 4pm on Sunday, November 18 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Donald's family or to Iowa Hospice.
Donald was born in rural Hardin County, Iowa on February 14, 1926 to Earl W. Harless and Ethel Dole Harless. He spent his childhood in the New Providence and Union, Iowa area. In 1941 Donald moved with his family to Duluth, Minnesota. He was a veteran of WWII joining the U.S. Navy where he served his country aboard the U.S.S. Thomas Corwin and the U.S.S. Victory. He was discharged with honors in June of 1946.
On January 28, 1951 Donald was united in marriage to Jeanette Thompson at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Radcliffe, Iowa. He was employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation from June of 1955 until his retirement in February of 1988. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora and was an avid motorcyclist riding until he turned 80.
Surviving is his wife, Jeanette; sons, Jeffrey Dean and his wife, Lisa of Coralville, and Timothy Alan and his wife, Renee of Eldora; grandchildren, Jessica Sue (Wes) Faris, Jeffrey Carl Harless, and Hannah Elizabeth Harless; and several nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Virgil, a war casualty in 1944, and Gerold in 1986; and sister-in-law, Aldean Harless in 2003.
