Don Theodore Lage, 74 of Blakesburg, IA formerly of Grundy Center, IA died Monday, March 5, 2012 in rural Wapello County as a result of a farm accident. Funeral Services will be Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 10:30 am at Engelkes – Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.Burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be on Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Engelkes – Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Memorials may be directed to Don's family.
Don was born July 15, 1937 in Tama County, the son of Raymond and Alta Christine (Rohweder) Lage. He graduated in the class of 1956 from Grundy Center High School. On February 15, 1958, he married Helen Marie Newton in Grundy Center, IA. They had two children David Alan and Lori Jo.
Don was a farmer, but also worked several town jobs throughout the course of his life to support his family. They included: Huisman Brothers Tiling, Wellsburg, Emerald Welding, Grundy Center, and for 23 years he worked in Marshalltown at Fisher Controls, where he ran drills and lathes.
He loved helping others and enjoyed taking care of everything from animals to people; he was most kind and generous with everything he possessed. If you needed something, he made sure you had it, if it was physically or humanly possible for him to do so. Lifelong residents of Grundy Center, Don and Helen moved to Blakesburg in 2009 to be near his granddaughter, Dally, and to help his daughter Lori and husband Mike with farm responsibilities.
Don is survived by his wife, Helen, of Blakesburg, his son, David and Patty Lage of Ankeny, daughter Lori and Michael Orman of Blakesburg, three granddaughters: Amanda (Mike) Geerdes and Amy (Nick) Nesbitt, and Dally Orman; two great grandchildren: Hayden and Addison Geerdes; two brothers: Glen (Karen) Lage, and Russell (Donna) Lage.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Murl and Elmer Lage.
