Darlene J. "Dolly" Barnes, 76, of Grundy Center, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, April 11, 2014 at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.
Dolly was born March 12, 1938 in Defiance, Iowa; the daughter of Ellis and Oda Ocean. She was raised in Harlan, Iowa. Dolly was united in marriage to Harry Barnes on May 3, 1952 in Denison, Iowa. They began their life together in Harlan, Iowa and in 1960 they moved to Grundy Center. Together they welcomed four children into their family.
Dolly was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. She was an avid reader of biographies and enjoyed crossword puzzles. She loved camping and enjoyed her life at her summer home on the Shell Rock River near Greene, Iowa.
Dolly is survived by her husband Harry, of Grundy Center, IA; her children Chuck (Dot) Barnes of Lincoln, IA, Cheri (Dave) McLaughlin of Monroe, IA, Cathy Aswegan of Grundy Center, IA and Craig (Connie) Barnes of Grundy Center, IA; 8 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; sisters Betty Claussen, Avis Rossen and her twin sister Molly Popp, all of California; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; great-granddaughter Kinsley Aswegan; several brothers and sisters and her son-in-law Gordon Aswegan.
