Darleen Haren

May 16, 1926 — September 22, 2010

Darleen Haren, 84, of Grundy Center, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. Following Cremation, memorial services will be held at 10:30 am on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Matt Miller officiating. Private family burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm on Friday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Darleen’s family.




Darleen was born May 16, 1926, in Palermo Township, rural Grundy Center, Iowa, daughter of Elon D. and Alberta L. (Bockes) Ralston. She attended school in Grundy Center graduating with the Grundy Center High School Class of 1944. On August 23, 1944 Darleen was united in marriage to Carroll H. Haren in Waterloo, Iowa. Darleen and Carroll made their home in Palermo Township where they farmed until retiring to Grundy Center in 1991.




She was an active member of the Grundy Center United Methodist Church where she had sang with the choir and help at various church activities. She was a former member of the AMVET’s Auxiliary, a member of Town and Country Golf Club, and card club. Her hobbies included dancing, golfing, bowling, sewing, gardening, watching spectator sports, and reading; and she especially enjoyed her family.




Surviving is her husband, Carroll; children, Wendy (Lee) Tack of Johnston, Terry (Nancy) Haren of Grundy Center, Becky (Duane) Nederhoff of Wellsburg, and Nancy (Rich) Wallen of Grundy Center; sisters, Margie Reynolds of Grundy Center, Cheryl Berger of Vinton, and Susan Cosford of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; brother, Marvin (Rosie) Ralston of Grundy Center; sisters-in-law, Donna Ralston of Grundy Center, Dorothy Meyer of Webster City, and Henrietta Haren of Anacortes, Washington; and by 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Leonard Ralston; infant brother, Merle Ralston; brothers-in-law, Kay Reynolds, Richard Shaw, Robert Berger, and Barry Cosford.
