Dale Edwin Petty, 89, of Eldora, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at his home in Eldora, while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at the Eldora United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Eldora American Legion-Walter Sayer Post #182 and V.F.W-Roll-Harless #3974. Memorials may be directed to the family.
Dale, son of Frank and Fleta (Mulford) Petty, was born on March 26, 1926 at the Eldora Hospital. He grew up on the family farm east of Eldora, Iowa. Dale attended grade school at Melrose #4 Grundy County School. He graduated from Eldora High School in the Class of 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served in World War II in the infantry and as a finance clerk in the Philippines and Japan.
Dale met his future wife, Marilyn Gunn, when they both were members of the Hardin County Rural Youth. They married on August 29, 1948 at the United Methodist Church in Eldora. They made their home and raised their seven children on a farm east of Eldora.
The Petty's were very active within the Shorthorn Associations. Dale organized and ran the Marshall County Shorthorn Sale for several years. Marilyn and Dale were the first advisors for the Iowa Junior Shorthorn Association and the first to be given an honorary membership into the National Junior Shorthorn Association. They owned the first and only Certified Meat Sire of the Shorthorn breed.
Dale was a long-time member of the Eldora United Methodist Church, a 4-H leader for 25 years and past Regional Soil Conservation Commissioner. He farmed for 28 years and started Petty Livestock Equipment Mfg. Co. The company moved from the farm to Gladbrook, Iowa in 1977. There they also managed the Pax Industries Warehouse for 20 years. He took pride in having shown their products at the Iowa State Fair for over 50 years. Dale was also a member of the Union Kiwanis Club, the American Legion for over 60 years, Lions Club, Gladbrook Commercial Club and the Eldora Masons. In 1994 they moved to the Petty Family house in Eldora.
Dale enjoyed life but some of his favorite activities after family were fishing, sports, visiting with neighbors, going to livestock and trade shows, Monday morning breakfasts in New Providence and going to Dorothy's Senior Center. He also enjoyed the Veteran's Freedom Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, wife Marilyn; his children Doug Petty of West Des Moines, Dennis (Carol) Petty of Gladbrook, David (Diane) Petty of Eldora, Duane (Barb) Petty of Gladbrook, Donna Petty of Ames and Dean (Sandi) Petty of DeSoto; grandchildren Cody, Denise, Dawn, Samantha, Dresden, Erin, Jackie, Ryan, Luke, Clayton, Jamison, Teagan, Carson; great-grandchildren Maile, Brittany, Alexandra, Austin, Ashlynn, Chelsea, Megan, Hayley, Aubrey, Claire, Isabella, Victoria, Drayson, Liam; and great-great-grandchildren Layne, Owen, Willow, Elisha, Jaxon, Braydon and Kaiden. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Barbara Stevens and Beverly Bridgeman; son Dan Petty and grandson Mason Petty.
