Dale C. Mulford, 80, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died of natural causes, September 19, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, September 23, 2005, at American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, with Pastor David Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation will be held Thursday, September 22, 2005, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with family present from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.
Dale was born December 26, 1924, in Independence, Iowa, son of Frank Bateman Mulford and Helen Margaret (Cook) Mulford. He graduated from Aurora High School in 1942. Dale attended the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Administration and Industrial Arts. Dale served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1946 to 1948. On August 26, 1948 he was united in marriage to Mardell Wedemeier. Dale began teaching at LeGrand High school in the fall of 1950. For his first two years at LeGrand, Dale was a classroom instructor in industrial arts. His last two years there he served as a teaching principal. During this time Dale attended Colorado State, in Greeley, Colorado, where he received his Master's Degree in School Administration. In 1954 Dale took his first superintendent position at Geneva High School until 1956. From 1956 to 1962, he was Superintendent of schools for Sheffield-Chapin School District. In 1962 he moved to Grundy Center where he was Superintendent of the Grundy Center Community School District for twenty-eight years, until his retirement in 1990. He came out of retirement and took a part time position as Superintendent with Hampton Dumont School District until 1995. Dale was active in many organizations throughout his career. He served as President of AEA VII Superintendents' Group from 1973 to 1974, President of the Iowa Association of School Administrators from 1977 to 1978, and in 1988 he received the Service to Iowa School Athletics Award from the Iowa Board of Control of the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Dale was elected President of the Sheffield Lions Club in 1958, he served two terms as President on the Grundy Center Rotary Club, was President of the Iowa Association of School Administrators (IASA), and a member of Tree City USA . Dale was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed gardening, spending time with his family and listening to or watching the Chicago Cubs.
He is survived by his wife, Mardell Mulford of Grundy Center, Iowa; four children, Gary and his wife Shirley Mulford of Rochester, Minnesota; Pam and her husband Gordon McDowell of Grundy Center, Iowa; Randy and his wife Lori Mulford of Iowa Falls, Iowa; and Darcy and his wife Donna Mulford of Grayslake, Illinois; thirteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters; Neva Mae Arnold of Lamont, Iowa; and Rozella Morgan of Golden Valley, Minnesota; and one brother Leo and his wife Burnita Mulford of Aurora, Iowa.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank Bateman Mulford and Helen Margaret Mulford, one sister, Mary Stiles, and one brother, Dean Mulford.
