Clarence Geerdes

October 25, 1917 — September 19, 2013

Clarence A. Geerdes, 95, of Wellsburg, passed away at his home on Thursday, September 19, 2013 while under the care of his family and Iowa Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, September 23, 2013 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with Pastor Gary Mulder officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 22 from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Burial will take place at the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown at 1:30 pm on Monday with military honors provided by Marshalltown VFW Post # 839 and American Legion Post #46. Clarence was born October 25, 1917, in Wellsburg, son of Henry A. and Alberdena (Neessen) Geerdes. He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1935. Clarence was a WWII veteran, serving with the Army from 1943 – 1946. He served in the South Pacific and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant.

On November 1, 1947, Clarence was united in marriage to Nelda Mae Beasley at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Wellsburg. The couple made their home in Wellsburg and in 1962, Clarence and Nelda adopted their son David. Clarence and his brother, Henry started their business, Iowa Radiant Electric Heat, in 1955, and Clarence retired in 1998at the age of 81.

He enjoyed duck and pheasant hunting, traveling in his motor home to visit family in Minnesota, going to Meskwaki Casino, and just spending time visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by son, David (Kelly) Geerdes of Union; grandchildren Adam Geerdes, Brian (Jodee) Geerdes, Steven Geerdes, Amanda Geerdes, David Geerdes Jr., Roy Tiefel & Brandi Tiefel; Great-grandchildren, Colter & Layne Geerdes and Peyton & Daniel Geerdes; and sister, Helen Arends of Wellsburg.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelda on May 9, 2013; by his parents; grand-daughter, Amber Marie; and brothers, Arthur H., Henry D., and George H. Geerdes.
