Charles S. Mason, 86, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Monday, May 7, 2007 at the Eldora Nursing and Rehab Center in Eldora while under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 11, 2007 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with Chaplain Randy Crane of Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Burial will follow in North Lawn Cemetery near Iowa Falls with military honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion.
Charles Samuel Mason was born April 23, 1921, in Eldora, to Mary Stebe Mason and Arthur Raymond Mason. He was one of nine children. After graduating from Eldora High School, he joined the Army on May 31, 1946 and was stationed in France. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1949 as a PFC. Upon discharge from the Army, Chuck (as his family called him) worked for Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas. He moved back to Eldora in the 1960s to help care for his ailing mother. He worked for the Iowa State Training School in Eldora until his retirement. On August 30, 1980 he was united in marriage to Margaret Mary Madole. Charles loved to grow things ? African Violets, amaryllis bulbs, and had many huge vegetable gardens. He enjoyed bowling and pin pong and was very good at both.
He is preceded in death by his parents; seven of his siblings and his wife Margaret. He is survived by a sister, Alice Ridpath of Eldora; two nieces, Carol Whiteside of Dallas, Texas, and Karla Ridpath of Clemons; two nephews, Darrol "Bud" Starn and his wife Diane of State Center, and Rick Ridpath and his wife Jill of Dubuque; and by many great and great-grand nieces and nephews.
