Catherine DeBerg

December 25, 1913 — April 16, 2010

Catherine DeBerg, 96, of Grundy Center, formerly of Dike, passed away on Friday, April 16 th at the Grundy Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit while under the care of the Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 19 th , 10:30 am at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Dale Janssen officiating. Burial will follow funeral services at the Lincoln Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Sunday, April 18 th from 4 to 7 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center.




Catherine was born on December 25, 1913 in Lincoln Township, the third child and third daughter of Walter and Tillie (Dieken) Bakker. She attended rural school in Lincoln Township and graduated from Dike High School in 1930. On January 28, 1936, Catherine was united in marriage to Joseph F. DeBerg at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in Grundy Center. The couple welcomed two sons Ken & Craig. Catherine and Joe lived and raised their family on a farm in Lincoln Township, all of their married lives. Joe passed away on May 20, 1981. After Joe passed away, Catherine remained on the family’s farm, still continuing to help with the farm well into her 90’s.




She was a lifelong member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church for 95 years, was a leader in 4-H, taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the Sunshine Circle of Lincoln Township and volunteered at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit for over 20 years.




Catherine enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, working on the family farm, music, was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family. Catherine was full of life and energy and will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved her.




She is survived by her children Kenneth (Peg) DeBerg of Wellsburg & Craig (Lois) DeBerg of Cedar Falls; grandchildren Mike (Jill) DeBerg of Hudson, Curt DeBerg of California and Tracy (Jeff) Beenken of Grundy Center; step-grandchildren Mark (Lisa) Cirksena, Brent (Rhonda) Cirksena, Ryan (Mindy) Buseman and Tim (Robbyn) Diamond; 5 great-grandchildren and 13 step-great-grandchildren. Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Joe F. DeBerg; sisters Pearl Dudden, Emma Gerdes and Lillian Tapper.




Memorials may be made to the Cedar Valley Hospice or to the church.
