Carole Heryford died June 11, 2014, at Valley View Nursing and Rehabilitation in Eldora, Iowa. She was born on May 13, 1920, to Harry C. and Bessie (Blackmun) Marks. She graduated from Eldora Schools in 1938 and went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1940.
Carole began teaching in a one room country schoolhouse in Alden in 1941. The following year she married Marvin Catlin in Unionville, Missouri. The marriage lasted until 1966, when Marvin passed away. They had two children, Becky and Tom. Carole stayed at the schoolhouse through 1946. She then moved on to work as a nurse aide at the Eldora Memorial hospital from 1957 until 1961, at which time she became a receptionist until 1982. During that time she married Max Heryford in Fort Madison, Iowa in 1975. Carole and Max moved to Sebring, Florida until 1997, when they returned to Eldora. Max passed away in 1998.
Carole enjoyed playing Bridge, and belonged to five different clubs for most of her 34 years of playing in Eldora and Sebring. She also became an avid golfer when she was 55. She and Max would play 18 holes a day. She loved spending her time raising flowers and working in her flower garden. She and Max always went to the Major League spring games during their time in Florida
Carole is survived by her children; Becky Wolcott, and Tom (Linda) Catlin, stepson Allen (Nancy) Heryford; grandchildren, Rick (Kari) Wolcott, John (Mindy) Catlin, Kelly (Matt) Fleury, Jennifer (JW) Stamison, Jason (Kerry) Heryford, Ryan Heryford; great-grandchildren, Julie Ferrell, Hannah Murphy, Tanner Catlin, Zach Murphy, John Stamison, Nicholas Stamison, Sophia Stamison, Emily Fleury, Zach Fleury and Rylee Heryford. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Raymond, Charlton, George and Harry Jr.; son-in-law Brud Wolcott, grandson Rod Wolcott, and great-granddaughter Rylee Wolcott.
Service will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, June 16, 2014, at the Eldora United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends beginning at 9:30 am at the church. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at www.abelsfuneralhomes.com
