Carl was born February 24, 1924, in Hardin County, Iowa, the youngest child of Ben and Lizzie (Massow) King. He grew up on the family farm south of Owasa, Iowa where he spent his entire life farming and raising his family. He was a graduate of Owasa Consolidated Schools graduating with the Class of 1941. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII, from 1943 – 1946, as an airplane mechanic. On April 4, 1946, he married Roberta Pope at her parents' home in Union. To this union were born; Cheryl, Susan, Nancy and John.
Carl served several years on the Owasa School Board and for a few years served as board president. He was active in the Hardin County Cattlemen's Association, the Hardin County Pork Producers and the Hardin County Farm Museum. He was an avid bowler bowling on two teams, and was always ready to serve as master of ceremonies at pork and beef banquets when called upon.
