Bernice F. Bittner, 77, of Eldora, Iowa, died Friday, September 30, 2005, at Grundy Center Memorial Hospital Long Term Care, in Grundy Center, Iowa. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Monday, October 3, 2005, at First Baptist Church in Steamboat Rock, Iowa, with Pastor Harrison Lippert officiating. Burial will follow at Steamboat Rock Cemetery in Steamboat Rock. Visitation will be Sunday, October 2, 2005, from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M., at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, Iowa, where family will be present to greet friends. A memorial fund has been established.
Bernice was born August 29, 1928, on a farm southeast of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, daughter of Henry and Alma (Lang) Frerichs. She attended school at the Hickory Grove Country School, Eldora, Whitten, and graduated from Steamboat Rock High School with the class of 1945. On August 21, 1953 Bernice was united in marriage to Neil Bittner in Eldora. They made their home in the Steamboat Rock and Eldora area for most of their married life. She worked as a bookkeeper for two Chevrolet agencies, one in Eldora and one in Marshalltown, a medical secretary, and as a secretary for the State of Iowa, in the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation from 1971 until 1995 when she retired. She was baptized in 1943 and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Rock where she was active as President of her youth group and in later years she and her husband were youth sponsors. She also taught Bible School and Sunday School, and was a Ladies Missionary Guild officer and church clerk for thirteen years.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, LaDonna Luiken of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; her niece, LuAnn and her husband Craig Miller of Eldora, Iowa; her nephew, Steve and his wife Becky Frerichs of Steamboat Rock, Iowa; and her great nephew and nieces Jerry, Mandy, and Katie.
She was preceded in death by her parents Henry and Alma; and her husband Neil Bittner, and her brothers Fred, Marvin, and Robert Luiken.
