Avis A. Eckhoff, 91, of Eldora, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 4, 2012 at the Eldora Nursing & Rehab Center while under the care of Iowa Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012, 11:00 A.M. at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. There will be no public visitation and interment will be private. Memorials may be made to Iowa Hospice.
Avis was born on the family farm in rural Eldora on July 13, 1920 to George & Mary (Schwarck) Platt. She married Leonard Gross in 1940. He passed away in 1949. She later married Don Eckhoff in 1953. The couple enjoyed 50 years of marriage together until his death on July 15, 2004. Avis worked for a dentist and an optometrist in Eldora, but spent most of her days as a homemaker, caring for her husband Don and her parents.
In her earlier years, Avis enjoyed knitting and many people were able to enjoy her work. She had a great wit and loved to laugh. In her later years, Avis & Don enjoyed the local Fellowship Luncheons. Avis continued to enjoy the fellowship after Don passed away. She also liked to read and enjoyed the Guidepost and the Daily Bread reading and enjoyed having people around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Leonard Gross and second husband of 50 years Don Eckhoff; sisters Fern Shufelt, Lucille Pierce and Viola Morlan. She is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
