Arthur "Art" R. Geerdes 72, of Wellsburg, Iowa died on Friday, April 6, 2012 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Private family memorial services will be held at a later date.
Art was born August 31, 1939 in Wellsburg, Iowa, son of Arthur and Fern (Roses) Geerdes. He graduated from Wellsburg High School and then served two tours of duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy from 1960-1984. On May 2, 1964 Art was united in marriage to Joyce Marie Squire. They lived in and out of Iowa while Art was in the Navy then in May of 1978 returned to Wellsburg.
Art worked as a jailer and dispatcher for Grundy County for about 12 years and then for a year as jailer for Hardin County. He then work for a couple of years at Meskwaki Casino in Tama retiring in 2002. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
Left to cherish Art's memory is his wife, Joyce; daughters, Teresa (Mike) Kramer of Plainfield, Iowa, Leisa Geerdes of Des Moines and Linda (Troy) Wilson of Union; sister, Barb (Ken) Arnote of Albion; brothers, Pat Geerdes of Texas and Gale (Gail) Geerdes of Minnesota; and by five grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Amber Svela; and brother, Douglas "Fritz" Geerdes.
