Arnold "A.J." Flater, 63, of Holland, Iowa died Friday, April 10, 2015 at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa while under the care of Unity Point Hospice. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2015 at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa with Pastor Mark Andersen officiating. Burial will follow in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa.
Arnold Jay Flater, son of John, Jr. and Jeanette (Rust) Flater was born August 19, 1951 in Waterloo, Iowa. He received his education from the Colfax #1 Rural School until 1961, and graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1969. A.J. attended Hawkeye Institute of Technology from 1969 -1971, where he received his Associates of Science Degree. In the summer of 1970, he worked an internship on a large dairy farm in Paris, Kentucky. While in school, A.J. was very active in the F.F.A. where he was secretary in 1968 and vice president in 1969. He was a member of the Colfax Future Farmers 4-H Club, showing dairy cattle at the Grundy County Fair each year while in 4-H, and was active in the high school band as a drummer. Following his education, he worked for several local businesses including, Johnson Plumbing, Brockway Plumbing, Bacon Veneer and Omega Cabinetry.
Survivors include his sisters, Ardell (Marty) Sailer of Hinton, IA; Arlys Strub of Alpharetta, GA; nephew, Aaron Sailer of Sioux City, IA; nieces, Angie Kellogg of Sioux City, IA; Nicole Strub Holcombe of Marrietta, GA; Valerie Strub Massey of Dawsonville, GA; two great nieces, two great nephews, and one on the way; and his special friend, Rita Sommers of Cedar Falls, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A.J. loved the farm. He was a quiet person who enjoyed observing others. He was very active in the local Jaycee chapter as well as the Jaycee Senate. He was nominated as a lifetime president with the Jaycee's. A.J loved classic cars, especially his Henry J that he restored and enjoyed attending the Back to the 50's car show every year. He loved cats, especially his cat Katie, woodworking, bowling, and visiting family members and friends.
