Arlene M. Bassett, 94, of Reinbeck formerly of Hudson, passed away on Monday, December 22, 2014, at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, Iowa of natural causes. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Community Church of Hudson in Hudson, Iowa. Burial will follow at Lincoln Township Cemetery rural Hudson. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 26, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Memorials may be made to Community Church in Hudson in Arlene's name.
Arlene was born at the farm home in Black Hawk County near Hudson, the daughter of Roy and Bertha (Wolthoff) Shafstal on March 13, 1920. Arlene attended Lincoln Township No.6 country school and while in the 5th grade moved with her parents to a farm near Morrison. She then attended country school before entering high school, where she attended Reinbeck High School and graduated in 1937. Arlene was united in marriage to Holger Sivertsen on December 14, 1938 and farmed near Lincoln, IA and 5 years later they moved to her birthplace farm near Hudson. To this union four children were born. In June of 1959, Holger passed away from a heart attack. The family moved to Hudson in 1961 and on June 17, 1961, Arlene was married to Melvin Volker, who brought a son and daughter to join them. In 1963 a daughter was born to add to our family. Melvin died of cancer in September of 1999. Arlene married Arnold Bassett on June 3, 2000 in Hudson, IA where they made their home. She enjoyed flowers, fishing, spending the winters in Florida and spending time with her family and friends. Arlene was a member of Community Church of Hudson in Hudson, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents; baby brother; step-daughter, Connie Volker; daughter-in-law Mary Sivertsen and her three husbands.
She is survived by children, Gary (Suk An Ya) Sivertsen, Denny (Cathy) Sivertsen, Jerry (Dena) Volker Curt (Jo) Sivertsen, Jilene (Mike) Reagan, and Sherilyn (Scott) Kistner; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Pat Fredin , Dick(Pat) Bassett and Mike(Sheryl) Bassett.
