Anna Werkman, 94, of Holland, Iowa, died Wednesday September 12, 2007, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
Anna was born July 18, 1913 near Holland Iowa, the daughter of Renko and Henrietta (Mammen) Schmidt. Anna attended country school through the 8th grade. She was united in marriage to Henry Werkman on November 9, 1933 at the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church. Henry and Anna farmed. They moved off the farm and into Holland on September 15, 1979. Anna started working as a cook for the Beverly Manor Nursing Home in Grundy Center in 1962 and then later cooked for the Grundy County Memorial Hospital until she retired. Anna was very active in many different organizations such as the Ladies Aid, the Holland Christian Reformed Church Willing Workers, the Hawkeye Valley Council on Aging. She was a Sunday school teacher and a 4H leader, and she was a member of the Homemakers Club. She was a member of the Colfax Center Presbyterian Church in Holland, Iowa.
Anna is survived by her six daughters: Lanette and her husband George Saathoff of Coggon, Iowa, Marjorie and Curtis Meester of Grundy Center, Iowa, Wanda and Gordon Akers of Grundy Center, Iowa, Arlene and Melvin Haupt of Wellsburg, Iowa, Lois Meester of Grundy Center, and Diane and James Ascher of Wellsburg, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson; one brother: Carl and Leola Schmidt of Grundy Center, Iowa; three sisters: Margaret and her husband Herbert Van Deest of Grundy Center, Iowa, Esther and her husband Chris Freese of Dike, Iowa, and Irene Schmidt of Grundy Center, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Henry on February 25, 1999; a son in law: Sylvian Meester; a brother: Renko Schmidt; and two sisters: Lucy Abels and Martha Schmidt, and Helena in infancy.
