Anna Marie "Red" Beenken, age 81, of Morrison, Iowa, passed at her home in Morrison on Monday, March 24, 2014. Visitation will be held from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 28, 2014 at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. Burial will follow at the Washington Township Cemetery, in Morrison.
Red was born on June 8, 1932 in Bristow, Iowa; the daughter of Lewis and Henerida (Doman) McKinney. She grew up in Butler County and attended Bristow High School. Red was united in marriage to Lutjen Gerhard Beenken on October 11, 1952 in Butler County, Iowa. They made Morrison their home and welcomed six children into their family.
Red was a mother and homemaker, she also worked for Pioneer and the Reinbeck Canning Company. Red was the first woman elected to the Morrison City Council and served from 1974 until 2001. Red was instrumental in beginning the Easter egg hunt and Pony Express in Morrison. She was an avid reader, enjoyed bird watching and was skilled at refinishing furniture and restoring just about anything. Her true joy in life came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Red is survived by her husband Lutjen; children Keith (Laurie) Beenken, Bonnie (Jerry) Shinn, Edward Beenken, Luther Beenken, Lynn (Gary) Neil and Scott Beenken; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; brother Kenneth McKinney and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers and 4 sisters.
