Ann Janssen Griffel
,
age 95, of Eldora, Iowa passed away peacefully on October 3, 2009. Born on January 12, 1914.
Ann was a lifelong Eldora resident. She studied journalism for two years at the State University of Iowa where she met and married her beloved husband, Dr. R.R. Griffel.
Together they raised four daughters (Kay, Jane, Rae, and Annie).
Ann enjoyed the game of golf immensely. A sport she initially took up to spend time with her husband would quickly become a passion to which she dedicated much time and energy. Ann competed in and won thirteen Iowa Senior Amateur Women’s championships and served as president of the Iowa Women’s Golf Association for 23 years. During her time of service to the IWGA Ann increased the opportunities for women in golf in the state of Iowa, creating many tournaments still in existence today. Her dedication to Iowa women’s golf is unmatched and an annual scholarship awarded by the IWGA now bears her name. She also served on the USGA Senior Women's Committee for a number of years.
Ann was also incredibly dedicated to her community and church. Ann supported the Eldora-New Providence School district for her entire life and was a lifelong member of the First Congregational Church of Christ, serving for a period of time as president. Ann also dedicated her time and energies to the Girl Scouts of America and was an enthusiastic member of Monday Club.
In her private life, Ann’s two greatest joys were family and travel, and whenever possible enjoyed them both together.
Among her lifetime of adventures, Ann was fortunate to travel with her sister Genevieve in Europe, Mexico and the Far East, drive with her daughters to New Mexico, and gather with her daughters and grandchildren on the Carolina coast. Ann believed strongly in creating an opportunity for her far-flung family to know one another and was committed to bringing her daughters and grandchildren together annually.
In addition to family and travel, Ann loved good food, a game of cards with friends, antique cards and of course, a well struck golf shot.
She was preceded in death by husband Raymond, daughter Annie and siblings Wayne, Genevieve, and George. She is survived by daughters Kay Griffel (Denver), Jane Conlen (Pinckney, MI), Rae Hershey (Chapel Hill, NC) and eight grandchildren.
The Memorial service will be held at 2 pm Sunday, October 11 at the First Congregational UCC Eldora.
