Alvin A. Stahl, 97, of Grundy Center died from natural causes on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 1, 2010 at Colfax Center Presbyterian Church, rural Holland, Iowa, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 3 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, January 31 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to Colfax Center Presbyterian Church or the Grundy County Memorial Hospital.
Alvin Andrew Stahl was born October 2, 1912 in rural Holland, Iowa, son of Andrew and Reka (Franken) Stahl, and was educated in country school, Colfax #5. On December 17, 1936 Alvin was married to Grace Muller and they made their home in rural Holland where Alvin farmed and operated Stahl trucking Company. They moved into the town of Holland in 1963 and in 1999 into the Sunrise Apartments in Grundy Center. He was a member of Colfax Presbyterian Church and a past councilman for the city of Holland. Alvin enjoyed working with draft horses in his earlier years but always continued to love horses and attended many sales and shows throughout his life.
He is survived by his wife, Grace; sons, Larry and his wife Carolyn of Holland, Dennis and his wife Margaret of Grundy Center, and Curtis and his wife Peggy of Holland; son-in-law, Virgil Heetland of Ackley and his wife, Mary Lou; sister, Alma Lutterman of Holland; and by twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Darlene Heetland; granddaughter, Amanda Stahl; sisters, Luella Nederhoff and Esther Rindels; and a brother, Vernon Stahl.
