Allen Dale Smeins, 71, of Dike, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at his home surrounded by family. A visitation will be held Monday, April 24, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Reformed Church of Stout. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Reformed Church of Stout with a burial following immediately after at Stout Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Reformed Church of Stout or Cedar Valley Hospice.
Allen was born April 20, 1952, to LaVern and Doris Smeins, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He spent most of his life in the New Hartford area. He graduated from New Hartford High School and later worked as a truck driver for Kruger Ag. He was also employed at Smeins Implement. On July 9, 1971, he was united in marriage to Cheryl Eiklenborg at the Reformed Church of Stout. He was also a member of the Reserves.
Allen was a lifelong member of the Reformed Church of Stout, serving as a deacon, elder, leading mission trips, a participant in prayer groups, as well as being involved in the church softball team. Allen also served on the New Hartford Fire Department from 1971 to 1985, and the Dike Fire Department from 1988 to 1998, and served as chief. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and racing. He was also a member of the Jaycees of New Hartford. More than anything, Allen loved spending time with his family. Allen enjoyed family vacations and spending time at their lot on Holiday Lake. He especially enjoyed attending sporting events for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Allen is survived by his wife Cheryl Smeins; children Brent (Kim) Smeins, Curt (Peggy) Smeins, and Jennifer (Travis) Ackerman; sisters Dixie (Larry) Corwin and Debbie (Darrell) Grandon; grandchildren Madison (Nick) VanWie, Kerigan (Alek) Kammeyer, Jack Smeins, Bailey Smeins, and Hunter, Chase, and Kali Ackerman; great-grandchildren Braxton and Bennett VanWie and baby Kammeyer on the way, due in late 2023; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents LaVern and Doris Smeins, and parents-in-law Elmer and Gertie Eiklenborg.
