Alfred Gareiss

November 8, 1932 — February 25, 2012

Alfred F. Gareiss, 79, of Marshalltown, formerly of Eldora, passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2012, 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora with Father Paul Baldwin officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow the funeral mass at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Eldora.

Al was born on November 8, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois to Alfred & Estell (West) Gareiss. He spent his childhood playing kick the can with his sister and brother. He graduated high school being hugely involved in diving and listening to jazz. Al graduated from Beloit College with a 4 year degree in Biology. Al also honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He married Polly Kunath in 1963. They had 3 children-Drew, Amy & Helen.

Al was very involved with the Boy Scouts, Coaching and selling insurance in Eldora, where the family settled. Al's favorite job was working for the DNR for the State of Iowa. He was an avid reader, sports fan and friend to many. Al was a very proud and dedicated father, husband and grandfather with a great enthusiasm for life. We will truly miss the contributions of Al and his great love for his family.

Al is preceded in death by his parents; wife Polly (Kunath) Gareiss; sister Trina Coso and brother Kurt Gareiss. Al is survived by his children Drew (Shelly ) Gareiss of Chesapeake, Virginia, Amy (Scott) Summers of Fort Dodge, IA and Helen (Tim) Barnes of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren Catherine, Patrick & Luke Gareiss, Paul Gareiss, Orlando Peace and Bridget & Jack Summers and Lynn, Kurt & Maggie Rich & Brian Barnes; 1 great-granddaughter.
