Alfred Eiten

Alfred "Al" Eiten, 79 of Wellsburg, passed away on Wednesday, April 13th, 2011 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. A funeral service will be held on Monday, April 18th at 10:30 am at the First Christian Reformed Church in rural Wellsburg with Pastor Tom Vos officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 17th from 4 to 7 pm at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. Burial will follow funeral services at the First Christian Reformed Church Cemetery.

Al was born on July 25, 1931 in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Ben and Mary (Bakker) Eiten. A lifelong resident of Grundy County, Al attended school in Wellsburg, graduating from Wellsburg High School in 1949. In 1952, Al was drafted into the United States Army, where he was sent to Virginia, eventually stationed in Paris, France, where he was a driver for military officers. In 1954, he returned home to Wellsburg where he began work as a farmer. He then met Pearl Cannegieter and the two were united in marriage on October 17, 1958 at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in Grundy Center. The couple later welcomed three sons. Al farmed until his retirement in 1991. He then drove a bus for the Wellsburg schools, later known as AGWSR Schools up until very recently, when his health began to fail.

Al was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg where he served as a Sunday School Supervisor on the consistory and also served as a past deacon, a member of Farm Bureau, the Interfaith Men's Chorus, member of the Ostfriesland Heritage Society, was on the Grundy County Fair Board, a member of the Wellsburg AMVETS Post # 91 square danced with his wife Pearl all throughout the area communities for over 30 years and sang in the Gospel Quartet for over 20 years. He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and attending their basketball games and track meets.

Al is survived by his wife Pearl of Wellsburg; sons Curt Eiten of Steamboat Rock, IA, Craig (Judy) Eiten of Wellsburg and Charles (Nancy) Eiten of Bloomington, IN; grandchildren Kala Eiten, Nick, Angela & Laura Eiten and Ellen & Benjamin Eiten; sister Lillian Eiten of Grundy Center and sister-in-law Ella Eiten of Des Moines; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Harvey Eiten.
