Alan M. Primus, 65, of Wellsburg, Iowa passed away Thursday, February 2, 2017 at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017 at the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, Iowa. The family will greet friends from 9:30 a.m. on Saturday until the time of service. Burial will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made with the Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Alan's memory to the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, Steamboat Rock Cemetery, Wellsburg Historical Society or the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church.
Alan was born February 27, 1951 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Herman and Lois (Jaspers) Primus. He attended Timothy Christian School, and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1969. He received his BA degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa in 1973, where he played basketball for the Flying Dutchmen. He received his MA in Elementary Education from Morningside College in 1998. He taught elementary school for many years in Moravia, Iowa and later drove trucks for Snittjer Grain and Eilderts Farm both of Wellsburg.
Alan loved the outdoors. He was raised on a dairy farm, was very active in 4-H for many years and loved hiking and hunting. He looked forward each year to spending time searching for Native American artifacts, and was always happy to share stories about his latest find. Scuba diving was another favorite hobby. He enjoyed being a member of the Jolly Boys. Alan traveled to Europe and Mexico. He loved to host hunters, family and friends, when he lived on timberland where he raised cattle and paint horses. Alan was a member of the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church.
Alan is survived by siblings Elizabeth (Clive) Ware of Mount Vernon, WA, Nelson Primus of Steamboat Rock, IA, Grant (Deana) Primus of Marshalltown, IA, Laura (Paul) Kammarmeyer of Manchester, IA, and Ann (Bob) Stecker of Rock Island, IL. Also mourning his passing are 2 aunts, 1 uncle, 15 nieces and nephews, 40 great nieces and nephews, 1 great-great nephew and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Herman and Lois Primus.
