Alan K. Berends, 65, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 17th at the Eldora Specialty Care Center while under Care Initiatives Hospice. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 21st at 10:30 AM at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Alan was born on August 4, 1950 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Edward & Cathryn (Reiter) Berends. He grew up in Steamboat Rock, where he attended school, graduating with the class of 1968. After high school, Alan enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He spent several years recuperating after succumbing to a serious injury and was honorably discharged after two years of active service. After his return home from the military, Alan worked at several local businesses as a laborer and later worked for Maytag Appliance in Newton, IA for almost 30 years up until the business closed its doors. He married Janice VanLengen in 1969 at the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock. They welcomed daughter Tabitha and son Michael into their family. The couple divorced. Alan was later united in marriage to Ruth Panthen in 1980. They welcomed daughters Melissa & Jennifer. They later divorced.
He was a member of A.B.A.T.E. of Iowa for 32 years. Alan enjoyed golfing, bowling, riding his Harley and grilling. He was a very hardworking man and will be missed dearly by his family and friends he leaves behind.
Alan is survived by his children Tabitha Havens of Eldora, Michael Berends (Melissa Blanchard) of Eldora, Melissa Berends of New Providence and Jenny Berends of Ackley; grandchildren Kassidi & Morgan Havens, Trinity & Mahli Berends, Courtney Wade & Dakota McIntyre; brother Edwin (Pam) Berends of Whitten & Kaye (Bob) Scholl of Gillette, NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter Justice Lee Berends.
