Larry Williams

Larry D. Williams, 76, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Memorial visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, Iowa.

Larry Dean Williams, son of Russell and Janet Boelman Williams was born on January 12, 1940 in Iowa City, Iowa. He received his education from the Ackley Schools, graduating in 1958 from Ackley-Geneva High School. From 1956 to 1958, while in high School, he served in the Iowa National Guard and from 1958 to 1962, Larry proudly served in the United States Air Force, where he was stationed in San Diego, CA, San Antonio, TX, Fairbanks, AK, and in Michigan. On July 27, 1963 he married Carol Ann Waddington at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. The couple resided in Steamboat Rock for 26 years, then moved to Ackley for 16 years before returning to Steamboat Rock. Larry worked for Gast "Peanuts" Construction, Hardin County Engineers and Potgeters Lumber before purchasing his own lumber yard in Steamboat Rock, and also owned Four County Building Supply in Ackley. After his retirement Larry drove school bus for South Hardin and AGWSR Schools. He was a member of the Steamboat Rock Presbyterian Church where he was a former Trustee and Elder. He was also a member of the Hoover- Eiserman American Legion Post #542 of Steamboat Rock, Youth Sports Foundation Coordinator for AGWSR, North Central "I" Club, Jaycees in Steamboat Rock and was an avid Hawkeye fan and a season ticket holder for 37 years for Iowa Hawkeye Football. He was also a pitcher on the Steamboat Rock Fast Pitch Softball team for many summers. Larry was known for giving out $2 bills to his kids that rode on his bus for their 8th grade graduation. He also enjoyed helping his son work on the race car for over 28 years. He loved watching his grandson's in football, wrestling, track and baseball and watching all the young kids in their extracurricular activities.

Survivors include his loving wife Carol; his son, Scott (Marla) Williams; grandsons, Austin and Cody Williams all of Steamboat Rock; sisters, Lois (George) Bartling of Aurora, CO. and Sandra (Bernard) Betten of Dallas, GA., several nieces and nephews and cousins. Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
